I gave you the stars.

*Originally written 7/28/10*

On Wednesday night, Chris and I decided to try our luck; we called up Grandma and Grandpa, in hopes of corresponding with our three year old. His younger brother is always eager to speak with us, yelling single syllable words, grunting, and slobbering on the phone. The big one is tricky. You have to get him in exactly-the-right-mood.

For the past week, every time I called, I would cross my fingers that it would be my lucky day! Tonight, his Grandpa dialed me up: J was dying to talk to his Momma. Due to my unrelenting appointment with the porcelin bowl, I missed his call by only a few minutes. I immediately called him back once I could see straight.

My heart broke as I could hear him yelling in the background, "Noooo.... I don't want to talk on the phonnnnnne." Apparently, I had missed that small window of opportunity. You don't mess with that kid. Ya know?

And so it goes.

So tonight when we dialed up our kids Grandparents, I held my breath.

"Mom! Hi. It's me J. I'm with my Grandma."
"Yay! Oh I'm so happy for you my J. I miss you so very much."
"Yes, but did you know what Mom?"
"What?"
"I left you a present, so you can be happy when I'm far away."
"Really!?"
"Mom. I gave you the stars."

  1. That is the sweetest thing I have ever heard. And the best part is that you know it genuine when it comes from a 3 year old.

BTW-Brielle is the same way with the phone thing. and the saying please, thank you, and sorry. It's pretty awesome sometimes how stubborn she can be.
